Best SF Restaurants

The Bay Area is known for their great food, and varied menus. Many people may have different tastes and opinions, but we got a few of NSSF’S staff members to highlight their favorite restaurants across the bay.

Starting in the Richmond District, Ms. Belkora loves Hook Fish Co. as a great destination for those seeking fresh seafood. This establishment has spent ten years perfecting its craft and now has multiple locations across the city, including a popular spot in Mill Valley. Ms. Belkora has said she specifically loves to get the $11 poke and chips, which she considers a steal for such high-quality seafood in SF. The restaurant also features an outdoor parklet that is pet friendly.

Ms. Belkora’s favorite move is taking her food to Ocean Beach and enjoying it while looking out at the shore. To round out the experience, one of her favorite bookstores sits conveniently across the street, making it a perfect afternoon for a reasonable price.

Moving into the heart of the city, Mr. Matt suggested Brenda’s French Soul Food in the Tenderloin. In this neighborhood they serve New Orleans-style cuisine that is a favorite for locals. Mr. Matt notes that the menu has so much variety that he has to try something new every visit. From crispy fried chicken and catfish to gumbo, the beignets and mussels are also some of his favorites items that define the restaurant’s vibrant character.

Meanwhile, across the Bay in Oakland, Mr. DeVries recommends Pizzaiolo, a delicious Italian eatery with a great fun and friendly atmosphere. Despite being on the pricier side, the incredible pizza and rotating seasonal dishes make it his go-to spot for hosting guests and family. He keeps his order classic, by always getting a pizza when he goes.

For those in a hurry or on a budget near North Beach and the Mission District, Ms. Jackson recommends the Flour + Water Pizzeria, and if you’re in a rush, their slice house. She loves their 6x6 inch Detroit-style slices, which are known for their fluffy interior and crispy edges. At only $8, these slices are a favorite among students (and teachers) because they heat up in just two minutes and offer an impressive cheese pull, according to Ms. Jackson.

Beyond the quick-service, the main restaurant includes some of Ms. Jackson’s favorites and her go to’s, such as the chopped salad, Cacio e Pepe pizza, and the Pesto Pizza. Ms. Jackson also raves about their soft serve, which is part of their slice house, and an affordable delicacy for an afternoon snack.

In the Mission District, Mr. Omar recommends you guys visit Arepas Latin Cuisine, a newer Venezuelan spot located at 16th and Guerrero. This restaurant is great for its unique atmosphere, and an authentic menu that brings vibrant Latin flavors to the neighborhood. While it is considered a bit pricey, the chill vibes and high-quality ingredients make it a standout destination that has quickly built a strong reputation.

Finally, Ms. Eilbert suggests Firefly in Noe Valley for a fancier experience. Firefly is famous for its fried chicken and other meat dishes, yet it remains incredibly inclusive with a wide variety of gluten-free and vegan options.

The restaurant is also pet inclusive because of its outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying your meal with your pets. Beyond the food, Ms. Eilbert appreciates that Firefly gives back to the community by supporting local San Francisco schools through various charities.
