World Cup 2026 North America
The 2026 World Cup is taking place in three countries, Canada, Mexico, and the USA. The World Cup officially starts June 11 and ends on July 19 even though qualifiers for it have been taking place since mid 2023 or almost 3 years.
How It Works:
How this tournament works is that if you qualify you will be placed in one of twelve groups making 48 teams in total. All of the teams in the same group will play each other in what is called the group stage. The top two teams from each group and the 8 highest 3rd place teams from all twelve groups, together this makes 32 teams in the elimination rounds. These teams are then split into 2 sides of 16 teams. Where they play each other and then the winners of a game in the knockout stage advance to play the other winners while the losers are eliminated.
The Finals:
If your team makes it to the knockout stage and then wins all their games in their side of the bracket they will make it to the World Cup Final against the winner of the other side of the bracket. Winning this game is the most sought after Achievement in all of soccer as you get awarded with medals and the famous FIFA World Cup Trophy. This game is the most watched sporting event in the world where the last World Cup in 2022 pulled in over 1.5 Billion viewers in all. In this single game due to the popularity in 2022 it made over 5.5 billion dollars from only streaming services and betting apps combined not including other sources of revenue.
The End of an Era but the start of a new one:
You have probably heard about players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and other soccer stars. How these players may be fun to watch a lot of them are speculated to retire internationally after this World Cup. How this may be sad but it creates room for other Future stars to get their names heard. This will create a new group of players that will take over leagues all over the world and might be just as fun to watch.
World Cup Economics:
The World Cup makes lots of money for capital countries both through hotel bookings, eating at restaurants, and through various sponsors. This is important because host countries and host cities rely on tourism to stay active and improve future aspects of it. For example the 2026 World Cup in the USA is projected to bring a 3.7% increase in inbound tourism. This is projected to make over 6 billion dollars in revenue while spending about a third of that on making the World Cup happen which means the US and North America will make up to 4 billion dollars and national headlines during the World Cup. This money is enough to replace aging infrastructure, improve federal health care, or support student education.
