Record Roundup 2: The Flop Of A Showgirl
Welcome to the Record Roundup. Let’s get into the music of the past two weeks.
On October 3rd, one of the most notable releases was Taylor Swift’s album The Life of a Showgirl. It was promoted with “showgirl” visuals depicting Swift in performing outfits and settings, implying an album about her performing on tour (which is basically what it is about). However, when the album was released, it was pretty disappointing. Although the production wasn’t the worst, some of the lyrical content was the opposite of that. There were corny lyrics like “did you girlboss to close to the sun” (CANCELLED!) and “so we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire” (Eldest Daughter), as well as mediocre songwriting throughout on songs like Eldest Daughter and Wi$h Li$t. Other things included on the album include a song about “knocking on wood,” a lame Charli xcx dig, and cancelled friends (cough cough Blake Lively). Overall, this album was a big let down.
Other music released on the 3rd included the deluxe edition of Kali Uchis’ album titled Sincerely, P.S, Fight Another Day by James Morrison, the 20th anniversary edition of Unplugged, Wet Like featuring COBRAH by Ashnikko, and Everytime You Go Away by Cynthia Erivo. Lesser-known releases include Before You Press Play by FearDorian and osquinn, Blasting Through the Speakers by Empress Of, and Only Heartbreak by dreamfone.
Last week, PinkPantheress dropped the remix album of her mixtape Fancy That titled Fancy Some More? Features include JT, Kylie Minogue, Zara Larsson, Bladee, and Rachel Chinouriri. It has two sides, three, including the main mixtape, one with mainly features, and the other with remixes from producers on each song. Personal favorites include Girl Like Me + Oklou and Stateside + Bladee. Also released that week are Khalid’s after the sun goes down, a Bladee and Yung Lean EP titled Evil World, Girls by Princess Nokia, and a single from Oklou’s deluxe version of her album choke enough called viscus which features FKA twigs. Some KPop releases are TEN: The Story Goes On by TWICE for their tenth anniversary, Blue Valentine by NMIXX, and Soft Error : X by Yves.
These past two weeks have had many releases, and hopefully you’ll listen to some of the music included in this edition if you haven’t already.
