Quadriplegia of Alan Queck: In 1978, during a rugby match, Queck suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury that left him permanently paralyzed from the neck.
Paralysis of Ed Block: In 1979, NHL player Ed Block was paralyzed after a brutal check (a vicious slam to the body) during a game. His injury led to significant changes in hockey safety regulations.
Joe Theismann suffered a comminuted compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in his right leg during a 1985 game against the New York Giants, caused by a sack from linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The fracture resulted in both bones being broken, and the tibia even coming through the skin.
Gordon Hayward suffered a dislocated left ankle and fractured tibia in his Celtic Debut on October 18, 2017. The injury occurred during an attempted alley-oop when his leg twisted underneath him after landing awkwardly. The fracture was in his tibia, the shin bone, and the ankle was severely dislocated.
Taylor Hendricks sustained a fractured right fibula and a dislocated ankle. He suffered the injury in the third quarter of a game against the Dallas Mavericks on October 28th, 2024. The injury was non-contact, occurring when he lost his footing and landed awkwardly. He is expected to miss the rest of the 2024-25 NBA season.
