8th Grade Student Council Candidates

This year, 8th grade has four candidates who are running for student council. Two will become full representatives while the others will become alternates, who help set up events and dances, work at the student store, and fill in at meetings when representatives are absent.

Votes have already been cast and counted, but the election outcome has not yet been made public. This article aims to give a brief overview of what each candidate wants to see happen in our school, so you can gain general knowledge about our new student council members.

SAFA

Safa was on the student council way back in 6th grade, and hopes to use that past experience to help improve our school community. She sees student council not as a project or a gateway to high school, but as an opportunity to make a real difference at New School. Some values she believes highly in are responsibility, teamwork, leadership, initiative, communication, student representation, inclusion, support, dedication, effort, time, and commitment. She enjoys helping others and understanding their perspectives. Safa has served as a passionate advocate for her peers, and looks forward to making their voices heard again within the student council.

OLLIE

Ollie believes first and foremost that student opinion matters. He wishes to create a suggestion box where middle schoolers can submit their requests and advice for school improvement. He is a big supporter of the school store, believing that students should be able to ask for specific snacks to be sold there, and hopes to increase its funding through bake sales and other sorts of fundraisers. He adds that more fundraisers will improve the quality of field trips and recess equipment. He sees himself as a capable leader with past experience on the student council, and wants deeply to improve our school further. He also says that his experience on New School soccer and basketball teams has developed his teamwork skills. Some values Ollie believes highly in are community improvement, student representation, hard work, speed, and thoroughness.

GALIT

Galit prides herself in her organizational skills, adding that she is extremely structured and direct. As a former 5th grade intern, she has learned the importance of responsibility in positions of power. Some ideas she has for the school include monthly themed bake sales, where the products they are selling resemble what they are raising money for (such as sports-themed cookies), and bathroom cleanliness lists. These lists would be posted on the bathroom doors and would allow students to report issues with the bathrooms upon use. Galit would also like to see more food drives take place at our school.

ELLIE

Ellie is ready to use her experience in babysitting to be an effective leader on our student council. Babysitting, she says, is all about the delicate balance between keeping kids safe, following their parents’ expectations, and letting them have fun. It is also important to know how to manage materials and strike compromises, skills that are extremely important for student council representatives. Some values that she believes highly in are leadership, preparation, and collaboration. She claims that she will produce good ideas in little time, increasing the efficiency of improvement projects. Ellie is a strong supporter of the NewsCool Chronicle, and plans to establish a collaboration between the student council and our newspaper. She will prioritize up-to-date information, and student council members will be able to write articles. She would also like to create more newspaper feedback forms and dance polls (for example, asking about songs and themes) to make the wishes of middle schoolers come true.

It is a bright new age for our student government. Stay posted for election results!

Sava Wallaert

Sava Wallaert wants you to read his bio under the afternoon sun, bathed in its warm hazy light, while the slender aspen trees on the hill behind you quiver in the wind from the ocean. He wants you to truly THINK about what you read in this paper, in the truest and deepest meaning of the word, and see it not just as a fun school project, but as a scarce and quickly disappearing resource. In a world beginning to be dominated by Artificial Intelligence and the minds of adults who cannot think about anything outside of what TV show is new on Netflix, the words of kids are beginning to become lost in the breakneck pace of modern life. Sava, a longtime fan of the newspaper, is looking forward to helping shine light on the unseen creativity of young people by writing short stories, media reviews, and poems, and editing the work of other bright minds.
